Pre-school (Nursery school)
Who operate
Government pre-schools provide educational programs for children for one year prior to enrolment in Kindergarten. They are usually part of a primary school.
The government operate many of the pre-schools. Most other pre-schools are managed by
the community or private operators. These pre-schools are licensed and monitored by the Department of Community Services. Contact your local council for enrolment information.
Pre-school hours
Most pre-schools operate in sessions of 2 1/2 hours each so that children can attend for either five mornings or five afternoons each week. Some pre-schools offer full day attendance either for two or three days per week. Hours are usually between 9am and 3pm. A limited number of schools offer full-time attendance for five days per week.
Who can attend?
A child can enter a Government pre-school at the start of the school year if they turn four before July 31 of that year.
What Students Learn @ Pre-school
Pre-schools offer an education program which caters for each child's individual stage of development. The program includes activities to develop literacy, numeracy, physical, social, and emotional skills.
All pre-schools are staffed with teachers qualified in early childhood education. Parents/caregivers are encouraged to participate in pre-school activities.
|
Enrolment
Contact your local council for enrolment information.
Special cases
Children with special learning needs can also attend pre-school.
In NSW there are 46 early intervention support classes. Decisions about the most appropriate placement for children with special needs should be made after consultation between parents/caregivers, the principal and the relevant early intervention or pre-school teacher. District officers are also available to assist parents/caregivers with their decision.
Infants Schools K-2
Public Infants Schools are smaller Primary Schools providing quality education for children from Kindergarten to Year 2. After completing Year 2, students proceed to a general Primary School in their local area.

For starters, the public schools in Oz are good. The
private schools are arguably better, but cost more than an
arm and a leg (there is a raging ongoing debate about the
benefits and merits of both options). You will most probably
be zoned for a particular school by virtue of where you
live, but this is not necessarily strictly enforced.
