"Here is an 'incomplete' list of information and services we required to 'successfully'
move countries. We will be adding to the information as we progress with our own
'assimilating' challenges, so check back regularly.

If you can't find the info you require, we invite you to ask
us and we will do our best to answer it. Remember that this is
still a free service, so don't expect us to always have an answer or respond immediately.
But we will do our best." - Mark

This is not going to be an easy decision or an easy relocation. You leave a great chunk of who you are behind, be it in the form of family and friends, or simply in heritage and culture. Either way, the
yin and yang of life demands some retribution for the benefits of relocating to a clean, safe, first world and truly democratic country.
Every day since we arrived, we have known that this was the right decision. But this might not be the right decision for you. So think it through carefully, and evaluate the pros and cons carefully. Added to the emotional toll, it will cost you a financial bundle as well.
what we did...
We first came to Oz on a LSD trip (Look-See-Decide) and applied for jobs while we were here. We were lucky enough to find a company that would offer us a job and thus could attain working
visas.
Working visas are valid for 4 years. There are tax advantages for being a foreigner on a working
visa, so make sure you use them.
Thanks to Karen (see contact details under further
info) we successfully applied for Permanent Residency (PR) in our first year of being
here (see ), and are now biding our time to become Australian Citizens.

You have several options open to you when deciding to immigrate. You can:
- officially immigrate,
- move across on a work permit and apply for residency once you arrive,
- use a consultant to do the paperwork
- complete the application yourself.
The Australian government provides every detail of the information you may require re immigration on their Department of Immigration website.
We have provided a list of immigration agents, but we don't specifically recommend or have personal experience of any of these. Part of your homework is to contact them and access the value they contribute for the fees they charge. Most of them will offer you a free initial consultation. Use it.
For a detailed contact list of these agents, click here.
Citizenship
Since 1949, when Australian citizenship first became possible, over 3 million Australian settlers have taken the important step of becoming Australian citizens. Over 70,000 settlers continue to become new citizens each year.
To find out why citizenship is an important step in your
immigration process, how to apply for citizenship, and other
related information, read more in our citizenship
section.

A link that I must mention that is not necessarily useful, but
rather a distraction, is 80's

Newspapers
We still believe that the best source of information is the internet. Let me qualify best source: it is the most current, independent (yet very subjective), and varied source of divergent information.
But if you are a paper person, here are some of the better Oz papers...online.

Australian news website

Some specific ones:
The Australian
The Sydney Morning Herald
Northern Territory News
Queensland Independent
The Courier Mail

Sport
Diving is cheap - approx $7 for an air fill (assuming you have your own gear). Sydney offers plenty of spectacular shore dives.
Rugby Union in some states is deemed an elitist sport, mostly played at club and private school level. NSW does offer union at public schools.
Unbelievably National Rugby League (NRL) has a bigger following than
rugby union in Oz.
Australian Football League (Footy or AFL) is the most popular of the 'rugby' games.
NRL and footy are more
representative of the masses.
