"I suppose we are typical South Africans living abroad: we still support SA sport, spend a lot of money phoning "home", and often partake in a braai (or "barbie" as it is known here). We have learnt to obey the speed limit, appreciate reasonable service, and breathe crime-free air...

Perhaps you are wondering what do we do for a living? Have a look. We have tried to give you a brief rundown of our experiences to date, and we will gladly tell you more if you are interested.

If you are thinking of starting your own business in Australia, definitely read the info we have provided below. It will give you some guidelines and hopefully answers your questions." - Mark

what we do
our thoughts what are your options further info
As an outsider, it is a tough new market to understand and penetrate.  This is compounded by the fact that you are starting from cold: your qualifications, experience and network of contacts mean very little in Oz - unless you are walking into a very structured environment.

And the Oz working environment IS different to the SA'n one. Contrary to the misconception that all Australians are lazy, expect long working hours (see popular misconceptions). But some things are the same - petty politics, 'insider trading', etc are global defects of the working world.
what we did...
Starting our own company, Beluba Functional Design in January 2003, dropped us in the deep end of a "mow the tall poppy down" society. It was more difficult than Mark's MBA prepared him for, more challenging than we thought possible...but if you want to succeed in life, you have to fail a couple of times to learn how to win.

But today we are pleased to say that we have found our feet. And we have been looking at alternative ways of entering the market, and found the solution with franchised businesses. More on this below.

The easiest and least painful option is to start out by working for someone. Take your time to build your network, get to know the new work culture, and make mistakes while someone else is paying.

Socialize, socialize, socialize. And NOT just with other SA'ns, but make a concerted effort to meet the Aussies in their own backyard. Get to know the culture, the slang and the psyche behind "don't worry mate". If you don't, you risk always being considered an outsider trying to take over their country.
